What are the common types of a hernia?
Most types of hernias are seen in the abdominal region. Regions of weakness in the abdomen where hernias are commonly seen include:
- Groin
- Upper stomach
- Belly button
- The region of a surgical scar
As most of us know, inguinal and umbilical hernias are the most common types. The other common types include:
- Femoral hernias: This is the hernia of the groin and commonly found in women. This type of hernia will occur at the hole in a person’s abdominal wall, where your femoral artery and vein run from the abs into the leg.
- Hiatus hernias: This is the hernia of the upper chest area when a portion of the stomach thrusts up into the chest by pushing through a gap in the diaphragm, known as the hiatus.
- Incisional hernia: This is the hernia of the scar from previous abdominal surgery. This would occur when the tissue squeezes through the fragile healed site in the abdominal wall.
